When The Sun Rises – Short Synopsis

When The Sun Rises is a historical drama set against the eve of the Hong Kong Handover on 30 June 1997 during the final hours of British-sovereign rule over the crown colony of Hong Kong. Its return to China, the motherland is imminent. The lives of four residents literally collide during the final hours under British rule. Each feels trepidation and anxiety for their future. Martin, the young entitled British-banker is desperately trying to hale a cab to get to his ball, impossible on a night like this. He crashes into May Lee, a Shanghainese Octogenarian May Lee who thinks she’s found her prince. Martin enlists the help of Florence a mystic passing by and a local cab driver becomes embroiled in the Saga.

Louis Papachristou – Writer, Director, Executive Producer

Writer Louis Papachristou completed his first feature film: When The Sun Rises (2015). A period drama set against the backdrop of the Hong Kong Handover, it trails the lives of 5 citizens during a crucial moment in Hong Kong’s history. In 2013, he made a short, Hotter Than July (2013), and has worked as a location manager on the cutting edge Cantonese action flick, Slow Fade (1999). Living in Hong Kong since 1995, he spent his early career working in publishing for a number of 4A’s agencies including M&C Saatchi, Mccann Erickson and Ogilvy & Mather winning a 4As award for his viral online campaign for The Economist. He also worked in the TV programming department Time Warner at TNT and Cartoon Network and in the PR department at CNN. Louis has written for numerous periodicals including TIME, Destinasian HK Tatler, The Economist, Hong Kong Magazine and The Peninsula Magazine and KEE Magazine.

Cordelia Choy – Producer

With 30 years’ experience in the Entertainment Industry, this model and actress turned producer enjoys working in front of as well as behind the camera. Cordelia has produced the historical drama, When The Sun Rises 2015, as well as TV shows, documentaries, corporate videos and has a welter of new shows in development. Cordelia is a local “Fixer” for International fashion/travel Magazines for editorial shoots, working with Internationally recognised networks, associations through to Charity projects and with award winning directors and producers from the world over on their projects. Casting Director and Line Producer for EF Education First Limited on numerous online films on as well as acting as a Project Manager for leading global Public Relations firms.

Biographies – Cast

YEUNG YI YI – (May Lee)

Yi Yi Yeung is an accomplished actress from Guangzhou influenced by her father who was a writer having over 60 scripts under his belt. After a long nursing career spanning 40 years, Yi Yi became an actress and joined TVB at the age of 60. Since then, she has been working with the broadcaster for the past 15 years, appearing in at least 80% of their TV productions and feature films. She likes dancing, singing, swimming and riding a bicycle etc. Her sterling performance as leading lady in: When The Sun Rises, show a furtive, natural talent with a great screen presence.

JAI DAY – (Martin)

Jai Day is an English Actor, Host/Presenter and occasional stuntman, spending his time between Hong Kong and Los Angeles. Jai is known for his work on Aaron Palermo’s Game On, Time to Pull Strings, (2014) and Transformers, Age of Extinction (2014). He appears in Transformers 4, Dragon Blade and Expendables 2 and Lust & Found, Flesh and Blood and soon Skiptrace. His leading role as Martin, the Etonian banker in When The Sun Rises 2015, shows his immense talent coming to the fore.

JOSEPHINE CHIM – (Florence)

Josephine Chim is an actress and has starred in a number of films including Mean Girls (2004), Resident Evil, Apocalypse (2004) and Take the Lead (2006). In 2015, Josephine sends up her character when playing the bombastic mystic, Florence in When The Sun Rises. She has also appeared in a number of stage performances including God of Carnage.

ELIZABETH HOLMES MOORE – (Nancy)

Elizabeth Holmes Moore hails from Memphis, Tennessee and Raleigh, North Carolina. Graduating with a BA in Art History from Ole Miss, her degree took her to New York in the early 90’s where she worked for The Museum of Modern Art for The Film and Video Department and in The Sales and Marketing Department working in film archiving and assisted in coordinating exhibits at MoMa. In 2002, she moved to Hong Kong, had 2 children and enjoyed traveling and living the Asian life until 2014. She now resides in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2015 Elizabeth turned to acting, performing her first role as Nancy the insecure fiancé of a younger lover in When The Sun Rises (2015).

 EVELYN MILLS – (Cab Driver’s Wife)

Evelyn Mills is from Hong Kong. A former beauty queen with a penchant for acting, Evelyn Mills shows her compelling acting ability playing the Cab Driver’s Wife alongside Rick Tan in When The Sun Rises (2015).

 RICK TAN – (Cab Driver)

Rick Tan is without a doubt one of Singapore’s most victorious export in the entertainment industry. The multi-talented man is the brains behind many popular entertainment programs. These include “Fashion Police” and “Jump Start”, amongst several others, for Channel V; as well as Chinese Television Network’s “Happy Hour” which was a highly regarded edutainment talk show view throughout the globe. More recently, he starred as the irate Cab Driver in When The Sun Rises, giving a sterling performance to this role.

Rick started out his career as a top model and graced the catwalks before shooting to instant stardom as one of the pioneer VJs for THE music and entertainment station, MTV. After enjoying a successful tenure in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China as a versatile talk show and entertainment host, Rick returned to his homeland, Singapore and soon after achieved celebrity status all over the region. Rick was highly sought after by major TV networks including TVBS, Sun TV, SET TV and even Star TV’s popular music avenue, Channel V, to be knocking at his door, making him the face and personality of over 20 entertainment, music and talk shows. The linguistically effective Rick can speak English, Mandarin and Taiwanese, tackling dialects with ease. This served as a catalyst when Rick decided to give acting a shot. The talented star stole the hearts of Chinese viewers in the region with his stellar performances as the male lead in China Television Station’s TV series “This is My Class” and “Searching for Mr Right”, to name a few.
He has also starred in the film Girls Interrupted and displayed his acting skills before live audiences in The Necessary Stage’s production, “Mardi Gras”.

Hau Woon Ling – (Wu Lin,May Lee’s Sister)

Born in 1922, Hau Woon- Ling is an actress who has starred in Push (2009), Je l’aimais (2009) and Endless Love (1993). She gives a stellar performance in supporting role as Wu Lin in When The Sun Rises.
